So what's a website anyway?

A website is an electronic book, which consists of a group of interconnected pages with information about different subjects. It can have text, images, forms, animation, video, games, and much more. A website could be compared with a company brochure, a restaurant menu, or a TV commercial depending on what the website's focus is.

What's a website good for?

A website has virtually infinite uses. There are websites about commerce, government, business, transport, education, travel, technology, real estate, health care, religion, sports, entertainment, fashion, and much, much more. A " good website " is an invaluable tool to help you promote your business, your ideas, your hobbies, etc., in an effective and inexpensive way.

Below are a few simple uses for your business website:

  • To reach out to more prospect customers in their homes and work.
  • To let your existing customers know about new service offerings.
  • To keep your personnel at other regional locations up to date about company news, procedures, and services.
  • To post what's discussed in those important company meetings where not everyone can attend.
  • To make your company known internationally and enter new markets.
  • To let your competition know that you're "in the game".

Other uses for a website in a personal scale:

  • To display your Curriculum Vitae in a professional and convenient way. Add your address to your business cards, and whomever you hand them to, will be able to review your experience and recommend your skills to prospective employers.
  • To promote your music band showing photos, song lyrics, members, and display the places and the times where you make your appearances.
  • To celebrate and promote your wedding ceremony to family and friends by listing the date, address, list of guests, pictures, loving stories about how you met, etc. Rather than having to phone everyone, you could just send them a postcard or an e-mail with your website address!!! - and after the wedding, why not post all the pictures instead of spending so much money printing a set of copies for every attendee?
  • Moving Sale ! Have some furniture and electronics you need to get rid off? Put up a small website showing pictures, descriptions, prices and a map with your address! Save all that sales talk over the phone and let them see for themselves what you're selling.

What makes a good website?

A good website is one that satisfies the needs of the visitors and meets the objectives of the owner. It should load quickly and make any waiting periods entertaining, be user friendly and intuitive (easy to navigate), and be compatible with the most widely used browsers and screen resolutions used by your targeted audience (i.e. the one-finger-typing old school business person, or the new era computer savvy).
